The GBX Group revitalizes historic buildings to breathe new life into older areas. So it was only natural they would do the same when they relocated their headquarters. They asked us to help turn their historic investment into a modern paradise.
With a focus on acquiring and preserving historic buildings in urban markets, it was natural for GBX Group to seek out an historic property to revitalize as its new headquarters. The turn-of-the-century Empire Improvement Building in Cleveland was just the spot to showcase their capabilities in identifying local, state, and national preservation tax credits and other funding supports while helping communities build new life and economic growth from urban properties that might otherwise become liabilities.
Our design installed a zigzag steel staircase to span the three-story atrium, accenting the building’s industrial past, while the conversion of an old freight elevator makes the space accessible to all. Inside, the exposed wood and brick play off glass-enclosed workspaces. Each floor mixes meeting rooms, offices, and workstations in similar placement on each level. We also completed core and shell work to prepare other floors for future tenants.
The GBX space highlights local artists’ work throughout, with designs commissioned for furniture and art. The fifth-floor café offers expansive views of the surrounding neighborhood.
