A Century of Innovation

As one of America’s most storied brands, Goodyear’s new campus needed to highlight their past as well as the innovative spirit that is leading them to the future. We worked with them to create a space that celebrates their story and encourages greater collaboration.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company wanted its global headquarters in Akron, Ohio, to honor its past, showcase its brand, and encourage the collaborative spirit that has made it a global leader. The new campus combines their Innovation Center, global headquarters, and the headquarters of its North American tire division. Vocon partnered with Gensler on the project, which blended a new, 640,000 square foot space with renovations to the existing 140,000 square feet.

Newly redesigned training centers and research labs highlight the company’s innovation focus, as do first-of-its-kind design features such as living vegetative walls that improve indoor air quality. A glass wall showcasing a sulfur graphic spans the lobby, giving pride of place to the primary ingredient in rubber vulcanization, discovered by Charles Goodyear in 1893. The Goodyear-signature Wingfoot tread pattern is embedded in the lobby windows, speaking to the brand as well as providing energy efficiencies. Walls throughout feature century-old reclaimed wood from the Ohio River.
